Supporting Black Girls makes the world better for us all

December 10, 2021

Dear Community,

It is a pleasure to introduce myself to you all as the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships for Grantmakers for Girls of Color, a role I started last month. The Black Girl Freedom Fund, our largest initiative, is something I’m excited to work on because it gives us a chance to uplift and celebrate the brilliance of Black girls*.

While our lives have been upended over the last two years and we continue to confront multiple pandemics and their consequences, the challenges have been much steeper for Black girls, femmes and gender-expansive youth in our communities. Yet, they have continued to exemplify leadership and fortitude through tough times, and they need all of our support to continue to thrive.

Despite stressors and hardships that come from structural inequities and are further exacerbated by today’s challenges, Black girls* continue to  inspire us as they face obstacles with determination, urgency, and generosity. We see these young leaders supporting their communities, challenging the status quo, supporting family structures, starting small businesses, placing themselves at the forefront of social justice movements, and doing it all while juggling the demands of (often virtual) school. Black girls* continue to do what they have been doing for years, and their leadership creates a better world for themselves and those around them.

But they also deserve the right to be girls, free from so many commitments and expectations placed on them. We need to do better to resource the organizations supporting their creativity, education, joy, mental and physical health, and offering opportunities so they can enjoy their youth and grow up to be thriving adults. That is why our efforts are urgent and necessary.

We need your help to keep the momentum going

Today, during your year-end giving, is the perfect opportunity to renew (or begin) your investment in Black girls*, and walk the path with G4GC’s Black Girl Freedom Fund and the #1Billion4BlackGirls campaign, as we support the wisdom and leadership of Black girls*. With your generous donation, we can increase our impact, and show Black girls and gender-expansive youth that they are seen, sacred  and loved. You still have time to contribute your investment before December 31, 2021 to make a tax deductible donation this year.

We are grateful for your support, look forward to continuing to work with you, and invite you to stay on this journey to abundantly resource Black girls*, ignite their creativity, and show them that they are loved!

With Gratitude,

Nneka Nwaifejokwu,

Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships

Grantmakers for Girls* of Color
